My mistake - I was editing the filter definition with the “play” button set and mistakenly cleared the definition and got a short burst of the whole pipe.
Our billing model is defined on our Understanding Billing page.
You do need to be careful not to write filters like "twitter.text exists" or "twitter.user.followers_count > 1", as these will return the whole Firehose until you hit your Twitter rate limit / as long as your connection can keep up with the massive throughput.
When testing streams, I would recommend taking a look at the interaction.sample target. This allows you to reduce the throughput of a stream, thus reducing how much you are charged in license costs for that stream.
